The Small Business Christmas Gift Guide: 9 Stocking Fillers Worth Making Room For

The Small Business Christmas Gift Guide: 9 Stocking Fillers Worth Making Room For

Because nobody needs another novelty pair of socks. Unless they're really good socks.

Welcome back to our Small Business Christmas Gift Guide!

If you caught our first edition, you'll know Sandy the Corgi kicked things off with her favourite independent dog brands. This week, I've reclaimed editorial control and we're talking stocking fillers.

One of the best things about taking Nudie on the road this year has been meeting so many brilliant independent business owners. The dangerous part is that I keep coming home with their products.

So, rather than another Christmas gift guide full of things I've never actually tried, I wanted to share some of the businesses I've discovered, bought from and genuinely love.

Some are practical, some are indulgent and some are the sort of presents you'd never think to buy yourself.

Here are nine stocking filler ideas from businesses worth knowing about.

1. WUKA — Period underwear that actually converted me

Let's start with something you might not expect to find in a Christmas stocking.

Period pants.

I met Ruby from WUKA while exhibiting at Westfield, and I'm so glad I did.

I'd previously tried period underwear and hadn't been particularly impressed. The pairs I'd used were bulky, uncomfortable and not something I was desperate to wear again.

Then I tried WUKA.

What a difference.

They're comfortable, discreet and don't leave me with a visible knicker line. I genuinely wouldn't go back to what I was using before.

And it was lovely to see WUKA win Best Business at the EVAs this year.

Perhaps not the most traditional Christmas gift, but for someone who's been considering making the switch, I'd argue it's a much better present than another bath bomb.

2. The Boot Room Company — Phone cords with a very practical purpose

I discovered The Boot Room Company at Cowdray Polo and ended up commissioning two custom Nudie phone cords.

Because when you run a small business, your phone is also your camera, office, marketing department and, rather importantly, your till.

Putting it down somewhere and forgetting where is not ideal.

These cords mean I can keep my phone close without permanently having it in my hand.

They're practical, personal and make a brilliant gift for someone who's always juggling a phone and approximately seventeen other things.

Which, now I think about it, is most of us.

3. Sew Aneira — A little something for the chicken enthusiasts

Some presents are so wonderfully specific that you immediately know who they're for.

Enter Sew Aneira

and the Free Range Chicken top.

As someone whose life involves rather a lot of chickens, I was never going to walk past this one without stopping.

I've already earmarked it as a future gift for my godchild.

It's the sort of thing that makes me love shopping with independent businesses. You stumble across something funny, thoughtful and a little bit different that you wouldn't necessarily have gone looking for.

And suddenly there's another person crossed off the Christmas list.

4. Rose Cottage Drinks — Espresso martini, anyone?

There are stocking fillers for sensible people.

And then there are stocking fillers for people who would quite like an espresso martini.

Rose Cottage Drinks makes a low-sugar espresso martini that's earned a place on my gift guide.

I love finding little indulgences from independent producers, particularly when they're something a recipient can actually enjoy rather than another object destined for the back of a cupboard.

One for the cocktail lover, the coffee enthusiast or the person who's already volunteered to host Christmas.

They might need it.

5. Llangattock — Honey with a little something extra

I was lucky enough to be gifted some honey from Llangattock, and their honeycomb and sour cherry varieties were too lovely not to share.

Honey is one of those things that can feel like a very ordinary purchase until you try something a little different.

Suddenly your breakfast has become rather sophisticated.

These would make gorgeous little gifts for food lovers, especially someone who appreciates a good breakfast or a properly stocked pantry.

Although there's a reasonable chance you'd buy one as a gift and then decide it was better suited to your own kitchen.

A perfectly understandable administrative error.

6. Willow Hammond — Christmas cards worth keeping

I met Willow Hammond when we were neighbours at one of Nudie's very first shows.

One of the lovely things about exhibiting is getting to know the businesses on either side of you. By the end of a show, you've usually shared extension leads, snacks and a fair few stories.

Willow's collage Christmas cards are such a lovely alternative

to the usual mass-produced designs.

They're thoughtful, creative and have that wonderful handmade feel.

Perfect for someone who appreciates beautiful stationery, or for sending a Christmas message that feels a little more personal.

And if you're anything like me, you'll probably find yourself reluctant to part with your favourites.

7. Cotswold Fox — Striped shorts that deserve a place under the tree

Cotswold Fox is another lovely independent brand that's made it onto this year's list.

Their striped shorts are a fun little gift for someone who appreciates comfortable, everyday pieces with a bit of personality.

I love a stocking filler that isn't just a miniature version of something nobody needs.

Something useful, wearable and a little different? Much better.

And frankly, there's only so much chocolate one stocking can reasonably accommodate.

Although I'm willing to test that theory.

8. Calibre — Handmade leather goods

There's something lovely about giving a gift that's been made by hand.

Calibre creates handmade leather goods, making them a brilliant option for someone who appreciates craftsmanship and practical things that are designed to be used.

Small leather accessories are particularly good stocking fillers because they feel thoughtful without needing to be extravagant.

They're also the sort of gift that can become an everyday favourite.

And I have a particular soft spot for businesses that put genuine skill and care into making their products.

Perhaps that's the jewellery designer in me.

9. Natrie — A cleaning product. Yes, really.

I'm ending this gift guide with something I never thought I'd be recommending as a Christmas present.

Cleaning spray.

But hear me out.

Natrie makes a fragrance-free multipurpose cleaning spray, and if you've followed Nudie for a while, you'll know that fragrance-free products have a very special place in my heart.

My skin and nose are both exceptionally fussy, so finding everyday products without unnecessary fragrance is always worth celebrating.

Is cleaning spray a glamorous Christmas present? Absolutely not.

Would I be delighted to receive a genuinely useful fragrance-free product? You bet.

Sometimes the best gifts are the things that make everyday life a little easier.

Even if that means getting excited about cleaning the kitchen.

Small businesses, big Christmas love

If there's one thing I've learnt from our first year taking Nudie to shows, it's that there are some extraordinary people building businesses across the UK.

Behind every stand is someone who's spent months, sometimes years, developing a product, taking a risk and trying to make something they're proud of.

And as a small business owner myself, I know how much every purchase, recommendation and kind word means.

That's why I wanted to put together this series.

Not because you need more things to buy, but because if you're already looking for a Christmas present, why not discover someone brilliant in the process?

If you've missed our first edition, you can catch up with Sandy's Christmas Gift Guide for Dogs, featuring five of our favourite dog brands from the show circuit.

And keep an eye out for the next instalment. I've got a few more discoveries to share before Christmas.

Love, Sophie x
