The All-Natural Dry Shampoo I've Used for 3 Years (And Still Love)

If you're still reaching for spray-can dry shampoo packed with mystery ingredients, it might be time for a kinder, simpler swap.
I’ve been using this homemade, all-natural dry shampoo for the past three years — and I'm only just coming to the end of my first batch!

Not only is it gentle enough for sensitive and skin-condition-prone scalps, but it’s also ridiculously cost-effective, low-waste, and free from unnecessary chemicals.
It keeps my roots feeling fresh, adds volume without buildup, and even has bonus skincare benefits (yes, really!).

When you care about what goes on your skin — and what ends up in the environment — simple, natural alternatives like this can make such a difference. Plus, it genuinely works better for me than anything I’ve ever bought in a can.

My Simple, Skin-Friendly Dry Shampoo Recipe

You only need two ingredients — and they last forever:

Ingredients:

Method:

  • Mix the Moroccan clay and tapioca starch together thoroughly.

  • Decant into a container with a fine shaker top (an icing sugar shaker works perfectly!) - This icing sugar shaker makes it easy to use just a little at a time.

  • Part your hair into sections and lightly shake a small amount of the mixture along the roots (not directly onto your scalp).

  • Thoroughly work it through with your fingers, then brush through to distribute evenly. A little goes a long way — if your hair feels clammy, try increasing the percentage of starch in your mix.

Tips for Best Results

  • Application: Lightly sprinkle onto roots where needed. I find for best results apply before bed — it absorbs excess oil while I sleep, and I just brush it out in the morning.

  • Hair Colour Adjustments:

    • For blondes: you can use the basic mixture as is.

    • For brunettes or darker hair: mix in a little natural bronzer or a brown matte eyeshadow to blend better with your roots.

  • Extra Bonus:
The Moroccan clay also doubles up as a beautiful, gentle exfoliating mask for your face!
Just mix one teaspoon of clay with one teaspoon of water. Apply to clean, non-broken skin and leave on for no longer than 5 minutes to avoid drying.

Why I Love It

  • Kind to skin — No irritating sprays, perfumes, or fillers.

  • Eco-friendly — No single-use cans or chemical residues.

  • Cost-effective — The original bags I bought have lasted me over three years (and counting).

  • Multi-purpose — One ingredient = dry shampoo and face mask!

A little self-care doesn’t have to be complicated — it just needs to be kind.
